I have never been able to understand how an artist can be in a state of happiness during the creative process. Man does not exist for the purpose of being happy. There is a much, much higher purpose to life than merely being in a state of happiness. (Andrei Tarkovsky) (full article)

Ivan’s Childhood came out on the DVD recently, have you seen it?
Ah yes, Ivan’s Childhood–i have seen it. in fact i’ve seen everything of Tarkovsky’s including his student film Sevodnya uvolnyeniya nye budyet. i also have a surprisingly extensive collection of films about him as well.
Sokurov has made a few things i admire as well, such as Second Circle and Stone (i’m still trying to find a copy of that one).
Speaking of Russian film, have you seen The Banishment (Izgnanie) by Andrei Zviaguintsev? i saw The Return, but must sit myself down and watch this newer film one of these evenings.
