worthy of amazement

January 30, 2009

“I can still hear,” he [Jean Greisch] recounts, “as if it were happening today, Levinas telling me how surprised he was that thinkers could be amazed by the fact that there is something rather than nothing, and that this is the radical point of departure of metaphysics. Then he added that, to his mind, the fact that in a world as cruel as ours, something like the miracle of kindness could appear was infinitely more worthy of amazement.”
